Marine Le Pen. The first official counts after Sunday’s first round of the French presidential election estimated that 20% of votes went to far-right candidate Marine Le Pen. In the end, the official count was lowered to 17.9%, which is still a historic high for her party, the Front national. Post-election, Le Pen celebrated this achievement with her campaigners. While only the first two candidates advance to the second round, the French press has been calling third-place candidate Le Pen the “game-maker” of the election and she promised her party members that she’d reveal her strategy for the second round on May 1. Gilbert Collard, a lawyer and Le Pen’s close confident, announced that the Front national was France’s “new right” on public television channel France 2. Whatever it is, this party will hold the balance of power in the upcoming presidential election. 

Nicolas Sarkozy. Avec 27,18% des voix, le président sortant arrive second de ce premier tour de l’élection présidentielle. Mais en déjouant une nouvelle fois tous les sondages dont certains l’annonçaient à 22-23% -, le candidat de l’UMP conserve toutes ses chances de réitérer son mandat. Nicolas Sarkozy. Earning 27.18% of votes, the current president came in second place in the first round of the French presidential election. Still, he did better than pre-election polls predicted (some estimated he’d earn between 22 and 23%) and he is certainly hoping to win a second term. Part of his battle plan is to increase the traditional number of debates held in between the two rounds of the election, which he says is necessary considering the unprecedented crisis sweeping the nation. This is also part of his strategy to force rival François Hollande “to come out of his hidey-hole,” said Jean-François Copé, president of the UMP party.

François Hollande. It is no great surprise that the Socialist candidate finished first in the first round of the French presidential election, earning 28.63% of votes. But there were no exuberant celebrations for the careful candidate, who is perhaps remembering that the Socialist party has lost the last five elections. Moreover, the 2012 election is not yet won and a vicious combat between the two presidential hopefuls will certainly be had during two weeks between rounds. Anything could happen. Holding steadfastly to his mantra of “consistency,” Hollande has refused to increase the number of debates held between the two rounds.

A hard lesson in driver’s ed. This is certainly bad publicity for the Auvergne driver’s ed program. One of their students mistook the entrance to a metro for the entrance to an underground parking lot. The student must have failed to notice both the sidewalk and the commuters coming out of the Chaussée d’Antin metro station in the 9th arrondissement in Paris. Luckily, no one was injured in the “crash course”… er, accident. “There is a parking sign right before, which brought about my mistake,” the driver explained to Le Figaro journalists. Our reporters were quickly on scene as the offices of Le Figaro are right next door to this stop.

Rodéo mécanique. Arriveront-ils à remettre sur ses roues ce camion sur chargé? Jusqu’ici, pourtant, tout allait pour le mieux. Son chauffeur roulait tranquillement sur la route montagneuse de Dargai, dans le district pakistanais de Makaland, à environ 160 kilomètres d’Islamabad, la capitale. Up until now, everything was going ok— the truck’s driver was rolling along Dargai, the mountainous route that winds through the Pakistani district of Makaland, located roughly 160 kilometers from the capital of Islamabad. He knew that the boss had stuffed it full to bursting, just as he always did. But the driver wasn’t worried. In Pakistan, this is often the case. The trucks are old and tired and standards are nonexistent, but the science of “loading” can result in miracles. That is, until this hairpin curve and just a little bit too much reversing… which resulted in this stupid accident and this ridiculous scene of the rearing truck and the mechanical rodeo.

Cent jours très exactement avant d’accueillir ses troisièmes Jeux olympiques d’été, la capitale britannique a enchaîné mercredi célébrations, épreuves-tests des installations sportives et déclarations rassurantes sur la sécurité de l’événement et la fiabilité des transports. Pour cette édition, c’est la reine Elizabeth II qui se chargera d’ouvrir le bal. À 100 jours de l’ouverture, le slogan des organisateurs a d’ailleurs été dévoilé: «inspirer une génération». Countdown. The Queen’s Guard formed an enormous “100” in front of the Horse Guards Building in London to mark the beginning of the countdown until the kick-off of the summer 2012 Olympics. Exactly 100 days before the start, the British capital held a series of celebrations. The government and committee also offered assurances of the event’s security and the reliability of the transportation network. Several tests of the various installations were held on the same day. The motto “Inspire a Generation” was also revealed. For this edition, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II will open the ball. One more thing: while the initial budget was estimated at €3 billion, it will end up being closer to €10 billion. 

Bon anniversaire! A l’occasion des célébrations marquant ses 85 ans, des enfants ont revêtu leurs costumes traditionnels bavarois et ont dansé pour Benoît XVI, dans la salle Clémentine du Vatican. Le pape, d’origine bavaroise, revient à peine d’une tournée exténuante en Amérique latine. «Je me trouve confronté à la dernière période de mon existence», a confié Benoît XVI en allemand durant une messe matutinale dans la chapelle du Vatican. Il a ajouté avoir confiance que les lumières de Dieu l’aideraient «à continuer avec assurance». Le Pape fêtera aussi ce jeudi le septième anniversaire de son élection au trône de Saint-Pierre. (AFP)

Happy birthday from Bavaria! To wish pope Benedict XVI a happy birthday, children donned Bavarian outfits to bring the traditional dance of the pope’s home region to the Vatican. The pope has recently returned from a tour of Latin America. “I am facing the last period of my life,” Benedict XVI said in German during a mass in the Vatican chapel. He added that he had confidence that “the light of God” would help him “continue with assurance.” The pope will also celebrate the 7th anniversary of his election to the throne of St. Peter this Thursday.

The king of Vincennes. “I am the only one who can win for the Left.” One week before the first round of the French presidential elections, Socialist candidate François Hollande set the tone from the stage at the castle of Vincennes, located on the outskirts of Paris. According to the Socialist party, 100,000 people were present for the rally despite the cold and wind. 

Le roi à Paris. Favori sur la ligne de départ, le Kenyan Stanley Biwott a assumé son statut en s’adjugeant dimanche matin le 36e Marathon de Paris. Avec un chrono de 2h05’10” pour couvrir les 42,195 km, Biwott s’offre du même coup, à la moyenne de 20,22 km/h, un nouveau record de l’épreuve, détrônant celui de Vincent Kipruto en 2009 (2h05”47). A 26 ans, le lauréat 2012 s’impose comme le roi de Paris puisqu’il signe un doublé après sa victoire dans la capitale le 4 mars dernier sur le semi-marathon. Dans la fraîcheur, et malgré un vent très fort, Biwott s’est envolé, seul, aux alentours du 30e kilomètre, pour lâcher inexorablement ses deux derniers adversaires éthiopiens, Sisay Jisa (2e) et Raji Assefa (3e) qui complètent le podium. «Je me sentais vraiment bien dans la première partie. The king of Paris. The favorite even at the starting line, Kenyan Stanley Biwott fulfilled expectations by winning the 36^th Paris Marathon on Sunday morning. Finishing the 26 miles, 385 yards in 2 hours 5 minutes 10 seconds, Biwott broke the earlier record set by Vincent Kipruto, who finished the marathon in 2009 with a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes and 47 seconds. Only 26, Biwott is the new king of Paris after Sunday’s win and his March 4th win of the Paris Half Marathon. Running hard in the brisk air marked by a strong wind, Biwott flew past his two Ethiopian adversaries Sisay Jisa (who finished in 2^nd place) and Raji Assefa (who finished in 3rd) at the 30th kilometer. “I felt really good in the first part. I knew that I had strong opponents, but when I left them behind at the 30^th kilometer, I knew that I could win,” Biwott said.
