Rodeo mechanics. Will they manage to get this overloaded truck back on its wheels? Up until now, everything was going ok— the truck’s driver was rolling along Dargai, the mountainous route that winds through the Pakistani district of Makaland, located roughly 160 kilometers from the capital of Islamabad. He knew that the boss had stuffed it full to bursting, just as he always did. But the driver wasn’t worried. In Pakistan, this is often the case. The trucks are old and tired and standards are nonexistent, but the science of “loading” can result in miracles. That is, until this hairpin curve and just a little bit too much reversing… which resulted in this stupid accident and this ridiculous scene of the rearing truck and the mechanical rodeo.

Compte à rebours. Les gardes de la reine ont formé un immense «100», devant le Horse Guards Building à Londres, pour marquer le début du compte à rebours avant le coup d’envoi des Jeux Olympiques. Cent jours très exactement avant d’accueillir ses troisièmes Jeux olympiques d’été, la capitale britannique a enchaîné mercredi célébrations, épreuves-tests des installations sportives et déclarations rassurantes sur la sécurité de l’événement et la fiabilité des transports. Pour cette édition, c’est la reine Elizabeth II qui se chargera d’ouvrir le bal. À 100 jours de l’ouverture, le slogan des organisateurs a d’ailleurs été dévoilé: «inspirer une génération». Countdown. The Queen’s Guard formed an enormous “100” in front of the Horse Guards Building in London to mark the beginning of the countdown until the kick-off of the summer 2012 Olympics. Exactly 100 days before the start, the British capital held a series of celebrations. The government and committee also offered assurances of the event’s security and the reliability of the transportation network. Several tests of the various installations were held on the same day. The motto “Inspire a Generation” was also revealed. For this edition, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II will open the ball. One more thing: while the initial budget was estimated at €3 billion, it will end up being closer to €10 billion. 

Bon anniversaire! A l’occasion des célébrations marquant ses 85 ans, des enfants ont revêtu leurs costumes traditionnels bavarois et ont dansé pour Benoît XVI, dans la salle Clémentine du Vatican. Le pape, d’origine bavaroise, revient à peine d’une tournée exténuante en Amérique latine. «Je me trouve confronté à la dernière période de mon existence», a confié Benoît XVI en allemand durant une messe matutinale dans la chapelle du Vatican. Happy birthday from Bavaria! To wish pope Benedict XVI a happy birthday, children donned Bavarian outfits to bring the traditional dance of the pope’s home region to the Vatican. The pope has recently returned from a tour of Latin America. “I am facing the last period of my life,” Benedict XVI said in German during a mass in the Vatican chapel. He added that he had confidence that “the light of God” would help him “continue with assurance.” The pope will also celebrate the 7th anniversary of his election to the throne of St. Peter this Thursday.

The king of Vincennes. “I am the only one who can win for the Left.” One week before the first round of the French presidential elections, Socialist candidate François Hollande set the tone from the stage at the castle of Vincennes, located on the outskirts of Paris. According to the Socialist party, 100,000 people were present for the rally despite the cold and wind. 

Le roi à Paris. Favori sur la ligne de départ, le Kenyan Stanley Biwott a assumé son statut en s’adjugeant dimanche matin le 36e Marathon de Paris. Avec un chrono de 2h05’10” pour couvrir les 42,195 km, Biwott s’offre du même coup, à la moyenne de 20,22 km/h, un nouveau record de l’épreuve, détrônant celui de Vincent Kipruto en 2009 (2h05”47). A 26 ans, le lauréat 2012 s’impose comme le roi de Paris puisqu’il signe un doublé après sa victoire dans la capitale le 4 mars dernier sur le semi-marathon. Dans la fraîcheur, et malgré un vent très fort, Biwott s’est envolé, seul, aux alentours du 30e kilomètre, pour lâcher inexorablement ses deux derniers adversaires éthiopiens, Sisay Jisa (2e) et Raji Assefa (3e) qui complètent le podium. «Je me sentais vraiment bien dans la première partie. The king of Paris. The favorite even at the starting line, Kenyan Stanley Biwott fulfilled expectations by winning the 36^th Paris Marathon on Sunday morning. Finishing the 26 miles, 385 yards in 2 hours 5 minutes 10 seconds, Biwott broke the earlier record set by Vincent Kipruto, who finished the marathon in 2009 with a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes and 47 seconds. Only 26, Biwott is the new king of Paris after Sunday’s win and his March 4th win of the Paris Half Marathon. Running hard in the brisk air marked by a strong wind, Biwott flew past his two Ethiopian adversaries Sisay Jisa (who finished in 2^nd place) and Raji Assefa (who finished in 3rd) at the 30th kilometer. “I felt really good in the first part. I knew that I had strong opponents, but when I left them behind at the 30^th kilometer, I knew that I could win,” Biwott said.  

Les pique-assiettes. Dans les eaux chaudes et azur de la mer Rouge, ce requin océanique affamé (ou requin longimane) évolue lentement mais sûrement vers le photographe, pour le moins téméraire. Autour de lui, des poissons-pilotes n’attendant qu’une seule chose: s’emparer des restes du prochain repas de ce squale aux longues nageoires. Cette espèce de requin est connue pour être particulièrement agressive et meurtrière et a été responsable de nombreuses attaques. Il y a deux ans dans cette même zone, une touriste allemande avait été tuée alors qu’elle nageait devant son hôtel. “Clean your plate.” In the warm blue waters of the Red Sea, this hungry oceanic whitetip shark moves slowly towards the brave but foolhardy photographer. The fish swimming alongside are ready and waiting for juicy leftovers. The whitetip is known for being particularly aggressive and has been responsible for numerous attacks on humans. Two years ago, in this same area, a German tourist was killed while swimming outside of his hotel. In 2011, the International Shark Attack File recorded 125 shark attacks on humans.

Time to brush the Gagarin. Yuri Gagarin needs some cleaning up after suffering from the pollution that envelopes Moscow, Russia. Fifty-one years ago, when he was only 27, this Soviet cosmonaut became the first human to journey into outer space, arriving at the space station Tyura-Tam at 9:07 am on the spacecraft “Vostok 1.” One hundred and eight minutes later, he had completed a revolution of the Earth and landed in Siberia. After the launch of “Sputnik 1” satellite in 1957, the Russians had a decisive lead in the space race against the Americans.

À seins nus. Mardi, plusieurs militantes de l’association féministe ukrainienne Femen se sont rassemblées seins nus dans une cathédrale de Kiev afin de protester contre une proposition de loi visant à interdire les IVG (interruptions volontaires de grossesse) en Ukraine. Après être montées jusqu’au clocher de la cathédrale Sainte-Sophie, les jeunes femmes ont fait sonner les cloches et déployé une banderole noire sur laquelle on pouvait lire «Stop». Elles ont ensuite dénoncé un «complot criminel de l’Église et de l’État» et également brandit une pancarte où l’on pouvait lire «Kinder, Küche, Kirche» («Enfants, Cuisine, Église») ou les trois «K», une représentation des valeurs traditionnelles attribuées aux femmes en Allemagne. Bare-breast protest. On Tuesday, numerous protestors from the Ukrainian feminist organization Femen gathered shirtless in a cathedral in Kiev to protest a law seeking to ban abortions in Ukraine. After climbing to the top of the bell tower of the cathedral of Saint Sophie, the young women rang the bells and dropped a black banner reading “Stop.” One of their posters read “Kinder, Küche, Kirche” (a German phrase that translates as Children, Kitchen and Church or the “Three Ks”, the traditional values associated with German women.) In the past, Femen women have stripped to protest prostitution and sexual tourism in Ukraine.

Alors, ils ont effectué le rituel de bienvenue qui consiste en un hongi où l’on presse son nez contre celui d’une autre personne, les yeux fermés, front contre front et main dans la main en guise de salutations. Un signe qui correspond au mélange des souffles et représente l’unité. On le pratique souvent trois fois de suite: le premier contact permet de saluer la personne, le second est fait en reconnaissance des ancêtres et le troisième est une pression du nez et du front, dans le but d’honorer la vie. A nosy welcome. The Maori custom of welcome is the “powhiri,” where two meeting people close their eyes and press their foreheads and noses together in greeting. This gesture is supposed to represent the sharing of breath and thus, unity. Pita Sharples, a member of New Zealand’s parliament, welcomed his guest, Donald Tsang, a politician from Hong-Kong, to Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland City) in such a manner. Traditionally, the powhiri is repeated three times: the first time is a way to honor and greet the new arrival, the second time honors the ancestors and the third honors life.
