Les pique-assiettes. Dans les eaux chaudes et azur de la mer Rouge, ce requin océanique affamé (ou requin longimane) évolue lentement mais sûrement vers le photographe, pour le moins téméraire. Autour de lui, des poissons-pilotes n’attendant qu’une seule chose: s’emparer des restes du prochain repas de ce squale aux longues nageoires. Cette espèce de requin est connue pour être particulièrement agressive et meurtrière et a été responsable de nombreuses attaques. Il y a deux ans dans cette même zone, une touriste allemande avait été tuée alors qu’elle nageait devant son hôtel. “Clean your plate.” In the warm blue waters of the Red Sea, this hungry oceanic whitetip shark moves slowly towards the brave but foolhardy photographer. The fish swimming alongside are ready and waiting for juicy leftovers. The whitetip is known for being particularly aggressive and has been responsible for numerous attacks on humans. Two years ago, in this same area, a German tourist was killed while swimming outside of his hotel. In 2011, the International Shark Attack File recorded 125 shark attacks on humans. 

Menacés. Les bergers hurlent au loup à Brignoles. Et lundi, ils ont tiré la sonnette d’alarme. Car selon eux, le loup ne cesse de gagner du terrain, et les méthodes de protection son insuffisantes. «On protège le loup à tout prix, par tous les moyens, pendant que nos bêtes sont massacrées. Car la seule vraie espèce en voie de disparition aujourd’hui, c’est nous, les bergers, et le pastoralisme!» Rassemblés dans le cadre de la Foire agricole, à l’initiative de la Fédération ovine du Var et de la Confédération paysanne, une centaine d’éleveurs et bergers venus du sud-est de la France ont ainsi protesté contre la réintroduction du prédateur qu’ils accusent de menacer leur bétail et ont exposé leur calvaire quotidien. When shepherds cried “wolf.” In the southeastern French town of Brignoles, the shepherds aren’t kidding around when they cry “wolf.” They say that their flocks aren’t adequately protected from the region’s wolves. “We protect the wolf at all cost and all means while our animals are being massacred,” one man cried. “The only real endangered species today is us, the shepherds!” Gathered for an Ag fair, roughly a hundred shepherds protested against the reintroduction of this endangered predator.

Car cet étroit piton alpestre, rongé par l’érosion, surplombe un à pic vertigineux dont la dangerosité pourrait d’ailleurs expliquer la présence attentive d’un troisième larron, suffisamment en retrait pour ressembler à un arbitre, alors qu’il n’attend peut-être que la chute des deux combattants pour redescendre en triomphateur et s’offrir toutes les femelles. King of the castle. As the laws of their species ordain, these two young male ibex battle to see who will be the dominant male in their herd. Their location, however, could have been slightly better chosen. Yet these surefooted creatures are able to mount rocky walls with agility and cling onto even the steepest slopes. But their precarious position on the eroding rocks explains the attentive presence of a third ibex, who is either acting as arbitrator for this dangerous struggle or who is waiting to leap into the dominant male position if his brothers plunge into the valley just below.

Rituel. Lundi, à la veille de la Saint-Antoine, le saint patron des animaux, les rues de San Bartolome de Pinares en Espagne, se sont transformées en parcours hippique. Fiery steed.On Monday, the eve of the festival of St. Anthony, the patron saint of animals, the streets of San Bartolome de Pinares in Spain transformed into an equestrian course. In this town situated west of Madrid, this traditional festival has been celebrated each year since the beginning of the 19th century. The horses and their riders must brave the fire and pass as close as possible to the brazier. 

Jeu. Des cavaliers afghans se disputent une carcasse de mouton lors d’une compétition d’un sport très populaire, le Bouzkashi, dans la ville de Mazar-i Sharif. Le Bouzkashi, littéralement le jeu de « l’attrape chèvre », est une sorte de polo qui oppose deux équipes qui s’affrontent pour attraper le corps décapité d’un animal (chèvre, brebis ou veau) et doivent ensuite le ramener dans une zone déterminée. Seuls les meilleurs joueurs, les «chapandaz», peuvent s’emparer de la carcasse. Goat’s polo. In the town of Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghan cavaliers fight over a sheep’s carcass in a popular sporting event called le Bouzkashi. Le Bouzkashi, which translates literally as the “goat catch,” is a kind of polo where two teams battle over the decapitated body of a sheep, goat or calf and attempt to bring it into certain zone. Only the very best players, the “chapandaz” can seize the carcass. Known as the royal sport of the nomadic peoples of Central Asia, it is now a national sport in Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.

Froggy sauté.This African Saddle-billed stork had just ordered up a nice lunch of frog (genus Hyla) when, to the delight of the watching photographer, his prey made a run for freedom. What this image (snapped in Kenya) doesn’t tell us is whether the stork had its lunch or the frog had its freedom!

Marée rouge. Tous les ans, depuis le IXème siècle, une tradition a lieu aux Iles Féroé au Danemark, dont l’objectif est de marquer le passage des jeunes hommes dans l’âge adulte. Les féroïens pratiquent ce qu’ils appellent «The grindadrap», à savoir massacrer des centaines de dauphins calderon… au couteau et à la hache. Évidemment, ce n’est pas tâche facile et il faut parfois s’y reprendre 5 ou 6 fois pour réussir à sectionner la colonne vertébrale des globicéphales, ce qui les paralyse, et ensuite leur trancher la gorge. Red tide. Every year, since the 19th century, a bloody tradition has marked the coming-of-age of young men of the Faroe Islands in Denmak. The Faroes practice a ceremony they call the “grindadrap” where adolescent boys prove their manhood by using knives and axes to massacre hundreds of dolphins.  Each year, close to 1,500 animals die in this bloodbath. The killing isn’t an easy task, and sometimes, the young men have to try five or six times before they hit the dolphins’ spinal cord thus paralyzing them. Once the dolphin is immobile, the young men slit the animals’ throats. 

À ciel ouvert. À l’inverse des occupants du véhicule qui apparaissent comme surexcités, ce guépard semble lui parfaitement à l’aise. Allongé sur le toit du 4x4 qui transporte ces touristes, il profite de ce moment de pause pour les accompagner lors de leur safari dans la réserve nationale du Masai Mara, au sud-ouest du Kenya. Comme eux, ils sont chaque année de plus en plus nombreux à visiter ce paradis et à découvrir les éléphants, lions et autres girafes. C’est aussi dans ce parc à l’équilibre fragile qu’a lieu la transhumance des zèbres et des gnous qui se rassemblent par milliers et en troupeaux pour traverser ensemble la périlleuse rivière Mara où attendent patiemment crocodiles, lions et guépards. An out-of-the-ordinary expedition.  Contrary to the excitement of the vehicle’s occupants, this leopard seems languorously at ease as he lounges on the roof of their 4x4. This incredible encounter occurred as the tourists traveled on safari through the Masai Mara National Reserve in southwestern Kenya. More and more tourists come to this paradise each year hoping to glimpse the abundant wildlife, which includes elephants, lions and giraffes. This park is also the site of the famous migration of thousands of zebra and gnu across the river Mara. The waters are filled with patiently waiting crocodiles and hungry lions and leopards wait on the banks.
