Rodeo mechanics. Will they manage to get this overloaded truck back on its wheels? Up until now, everything was going ok— the truck’s driver was rolling along Dargai, the mountainous route that winds through the Pakistani district of Makaland, located roughly 160 kilometers from the capital of Islamabad. He knew that the boss had stuffed it full to bursting, just as he always did. But the driver wasn’t worried. In Pakistan, this is often the case. The trucks are old and tired and standards are nonexistent, but the science of “loading” can result in miracles. That is, until this hairpin curve and just a little bit too much reversing… which resulted in this stupid accident and this ridiculous scene of the rearing truck and the mechanical rodeo.

Bon anniversaire! A l’occasion des célébrations marquant ses 85 ans, des enfants ont revêtu leurs costumes traditionnels bavarois et ont dansé pour Benoît XVI, dans la salle Clémentine du Vatican. Happy birthday from Bavaria! To wish pope Benedict XVI a happy birthday, children donned Bavarian outfits to bring the traditional dance of the pope’s home region to the Vatican. The pope has recently returned from a tour of Latin America. “I am facing the last period of my life,” Benedict XVI said in German during a mass in the Vatican chapel. He added that he had confidence that “the light of God” would help him “continue with assurance.” The pope will also celebrate the 7th anniversary of his election to the throne of St. Peter this Thursday.

Le roi à Paris. Favori sur la ligne de départ, le Kenyan Stanley Biwott a assumé son statut en s’adjugeant dimanche matin le 36e Marathon de Paris. Avec un chrono de 2h05’10” pour couvrir les 42,195 km, Biwott s’offre du même coup, à la moyenne de 20,22 km/h, un nouveau record de l’épreuve, détrônant celui de Vincent Kipruto en 2009 (2h05”47). A 26 ans, le lauréat 2012 s’impose comme le roi de Paris puisqu’il signe un doublé après sa victoire dans la capitale le 4 mars dernier sur le semi-marathon. Dans la fraîcheur, et malgré un vent très fort, Biwott s’est envolé, seul, aux alentours du 30e kilomètre, pour lâcher inexorablement ses deux derniers adversaires éthiopiens, Sisay Jisa (2e) et Raji Assefa (3e) qui complètent le podium. «Je me sentais vraiment bien dans la première partie. The king of Paris. The favorite even at the starting line, Kenyan Stanley Biwott fulfilled expectations by winning the 36^th Paris Marathon on Sunday morning. Finishing the 26 miles, 385 yards in 2 hours 5 minutes 10 seconds, Biwott broke the earlier record set by Vincent Kipruto, who finished the marathon in 2009 with a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes and 47 seconds. Only 26, Biwott is the new king of Paris after Sunday’s win and his March 4th win of the Paris Half Marathon. Running hard in the brisk air marked by a strong wind, Biwott flew past his two Ethiopian adversaries Sisay Jisa (who finished in 2^nd place) and Raji Assefa (who finished in 3rd) at the 30th kilometer. “I felt really good in the first part. I knew that I had strong opponents, but when I left them behind at the 30^th kilometer, I knew that I could win,” Biwott said.  

Star wars. Comment se sont formés les premières étoiles et les trous noirs ? Sommes-nous seuls dans l’univers ? Le radiotélescope le plus gros et le plus révolutionnaire au monde, le Square Kilometre Array, pourrait nous aider à répondre à ces questions. Une équipe internationale d’astronomes collabore actuellement à ce projet audacieux. Ce télescope révolutionnaire sera composé de 3000 antennes paraboliques couvrant toute la surface d’un continent. Ce méga projet scientifique d’envergure internationale sera réalisé pour un coût de 2 milliards de dollars au cours de la prochaine décennie afin de nous fournir de nouvelles informations sur les confins les plus sombres de notre univers. Mais la décision sur son futur emplacement n’est pas encore prise. L’Afrique du Sud cherche à s’imposer face à l’Australie et à la Nouvelle-Zélande pour accueillir ce projet gigantesque. The Square Kilometre Array, which will be the world’s biggest and most revolutionary radio telescope, may help us find the answers to these questions. Currently, an international team of astronomers is collaborating on the telescope. This scientific mega-project, which will be made up of 3,000 satellite dishes, will require an international commitment of up to $2 billion over the next decade before it can bring us new information from the farthest corners of the universe.  But the decision of where to install this giant telescope has not yet been made: South Africa and Australia are in fierce competition to host this project.

French, Muslims, citizens of a republic. Thousands of Parisians participated in a march against racism, anti-Semitism and terrorism on Sunday afternoon. The march was organized by the International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism, SOS Racisme, the French union of Jewish students and the French association of victims of terrorism.

Trembler. Ces deux habitantes de Mexico sont sous le choc après un violent tremblement de terre d’une magnitude de 7,6 sur l’échelle de Richter. Le séisme a frappé ce mardi, à midi (heure locale), le sud-ouest du Mexique, près de la station balnéaire d’Acapulco. La secousse a été ressentie jusqu’à la capitale. Le dernier bilan fait état de onze blessés, dont deux grièvement, et de centaines d’habitations endommagées. Shaken. These women are still in shock after a violent earthquake (magnitude 7.6 on the Richter scale) hit southwestern Mexico on Tuesday. The earthquake’s center was near the resort town of Acapulco but was felt as far north as the capital. At least 11 people were injured, two seriously, and hundreds of homes damaged. This earthquake is the most powerful  to hit Mexico since 1985, when a magnitude 8.1 killed thousands.

In the icy arms of Christ. Courageous or just crazy? For thousands of Russians, an icy bath is the way to both commemorate Christ’s baptism and wash away their sins each Epiphany. As the tradition takes place in temperatures well below freezing, it is not recommended to the elderly, the young and people with heart problems. Even so, more than 400,000 people braved the cold in the name of their faith. That said, to give themselves courage, many drink vodka beforehand.

Car cet étroit piton alpestre, rongé par l’érosion, surplombe un à pic vertigineux dont la dangerosité pourrait d’ailleurs expliquer la présence attentive d’un troisième larron, suffisamment en retrait pour ressembler à un arbitre, alors qu’il n’attend peut-être que la chute des deux combattants pour redescendre en triomphateur et s’offrir toutes les femelles. King of the castle. As the laws of their species ordain, these two young male ibex battle to see who will be the dominant male in their herd. Their location, however, could have been slightly better chosen. Yet these surefooted creatures are able to mount rocky walls with agility and cling onto even the steepest slopes. But their precarious position on the eroding rocks explains the attentive presence of a third ibex, who is either acting as arbitrator for this dangerous struggle or who is waiting to leap into the dominant male position if his brothers plunge into the valley just below.
